First Friday: More Poems from the Salon

Join us for SDWI’s First Friday Poetry Reading, November 1, 2024 from 5:15 PM – 6 PM, followed by an art gallery open house from 6 PM – 8 PM. The poetry portion of the evening features poets from The Poetry Salon and will be hosted by Leslie Hodge.

Poets from the Salon:

Poet and printmaker, Tammy Greenwood is a Louisiana native residing in California. Her work is heavily influenced by the varying landscape and culture of both states she calls home. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee and her work appears or is forthcoming in Rattle, Pinch, Whale Road Review, SWWIM, Door is a Jar, ONE ART, Rust & Moth, Orange Blossom Review, San Pedro River Review, Santa Fe Literary Review, Emerge Literary Journal, FERAL, and elsewhere.

Leslie Hodge has poems published in Catamaran Literary Reader, The Main Street Rag, South Florida Poetry Journal, ONE ART, Whale Road Review, and elsewhere. Her chapbook, Escape, is scheduled to be published by Kelsay Books in late 2024. Leslie is currently reading for The Adroit Journal. Her website is www.lesliehodgepoet.com.

Jennifer Karp began her love of writing at the age of eight. She earned recognition as a finalist in the 2023-24 Steve Kowit Poetry Prize and as a winner of the San Diego Reader Poetry Contest. Jennifer’s work appears in numerous journals, anthologies, and international magazines, touching hearts and minds around the world.

Jen Laffler is an award-winning poet, author, and educator. Her children’s book, J is for Jitterbug: A Fanciful Animal Alphabet, illustrated by Tony Perrin, was published in 2016. Jen served three years as Director of the San Diego Writers Festival’s KidsWrite! Children’s Writing Contest, and currently teaches children’s writing classes in partnership with San Diego Writers Ink., Kids! San Diego Poetry Annual, and CoTA (Collaborations: Teachers and Artists).

Ron Lauderbach is a retired high school English and journalism teacher who earned an MFA poetry at SDSU late in life. He writes to have fun, tell stories, and preserve memories. Ron’s work is in several journals, and he earned an honorable mention in the 2022 Steve Kowit Prize competition. He has a chapbook, Snapshots, from Kelsay Books.

Pat Obuchowski is a best-selling and award-winning author. She has written four non-fiction books, including Gutsy Women Win. Pat is a business owner and speaker. Although relatively new to the world of poetry writing, her poems have been published in The Journal of Undiscovered Poets and the California Writers Club 2023 Poetry Anthology.

Margaret Sullivan is an American-Canadian poet and editor in chief of the Journal of Undiscovered Poets. She is a professor of consumer behaviour, with academic publications in the area of vinyl music consumption. Margaret is the author of a poetry book, Mean Dogs, and her most recent poetry publications are in Yolk Literary Journal and The Galway Review. Her children’s book, Jacinta’s Orderly World, will be published by Plumleaf Press.

Barbara Thomson writes poetry expressing the beauty of nature, and the joys and heartaches of being human. She has participated in San Diego Writers, Ink, and the Poetry Salon. Barbara has poems published or forthcoming in the San Diego Poetry Annual, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and The Journal of Undiscovered Poets. She is working on her third novel and a book of poetry.

Patricia Aya Williams grew up in San Jose, CA. She is a Red Wheelbarrow Poetry Prize recipient, Pushcart Prize nominee, and Steve Kowit Poetry Prize finalist. Her microchap Haiku for Parents was published in 2020 by Origami Poems Project. Her work has appeared in Santa Clara Review, The Good Life Review, Dunes Review, San Diego Poetry Annual, Writers Resist, and elsewhere.
